The town of Kamuela might be a small town, but it’s definitely big on flavor. Home to some of the best restaurants on the Big Island of Hawaii and the biggest ranch in the state, Kamuela is full of small farms that contribute to the tastes you find on your dinner plate. Here are some favorite Kamuela restaurants that you should visit the next time you are in Hawaii.
Merriman’s is essential island dining. Chef Peter Merriman had a vision for the growth of local agriculture 25 years ago, and he and 12 other prominent chefs encouraged farmers to grow local fruits and vegetables, raise meats locally, and start a healthier and more sustainable Hawaii. The well-chosen wine list features selections from Washington, Oregon, California, as well as Europe. The service is warm and full of the aloha spirit.
2. The Red Water Cafe
The Red Water Cafe offers happy hour daily from 5 to 6 p.m. and live music on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday nights. Chefs prepare the food with local produce, meat, and fish. The ahi stir-fry and the sushi are some favorites. The café also has a nice choice of beers, cocktails, and non-alcoholic drinks.
3. Under The Bodhi Tree
Known as a great spot for vegans and vegetarians, Under The Bodhi Tree features an incredible breakfast. The restaurant serves fresh, healthy meals, and most of the ingredients are grown on the Big Island. The build-your-own fruit smoothies, acai banana bowl, kombucha, fresh soups and salads, veggie burger, and the squash island are all good choices.
4. Pau Pizza
The salads, sandwiches, and pizzas at Pau Pizza are all delicious. One favorite includes the Royal Hawaiian pizza with ham, bacon, four cheeses, pineapple, and caramelized onions. You can bring your own wine, and Pau Pizza has a cozy atmosphere. All of the ingredients are sourced locally, and it is also a great place for takeout.
5. Hawaiian Style Cafe
Hawaiian Style Cafe is one of those dive places with down-home food and huge portions. If you want real Hawaiian food, this is the place to go. The banana macadamia pancake is a must for breakfast, and the beef stew, moco loco, and Kahlua pork are all great lunch options.
6. Village Burger
Located in the Parker Ranch Center in Kamuela, Village Burger serves pasture-raised Hawaiian beef and veal that is hormone and antibiotic-free. The restaurant also serves ahi and vegetarian burgers, and great milkshakes. The fries are hand cut, and you can get them mixed with Parmesan goop, wasabi mayo, sweet chili, or sun-dried tomato caper sauce. Village Burger is ranked as one of the top 10 burger joints in the nation.
As you can see, the small town of Kamuela gives you plenty of options when it comes to dining. Along with delicious places to eat, there are also great hotels in Kamuela, making it a perfect spot for spending your Hawaiian vacation. Aloha!
