Let’s get one thing straight. I am the kind of girl who will eat Hawaiian oxtail soup even when it’s not famous. So, when I walked by and saw the sign above Asahi Grill (AKA Kam Bowl) that said “Home Of The Famous Hawaiian Oxtail Soup”, I knew that would be my lunch that day.

Let me just say if you live in or are visiting Hawaii, you need to try this soup! This is the soup I want next time I am sick. This is the soup I know I am going to have a craving for again and again. Thank you, Asahi Grill.

It’s full of different herbs (star anise was one of them), Chinese parsley aka cilantro (which you can ask them not to add), and the flavorful oxtail. You add minced ginger to your liking and suck and slurp away. The oxtail melted in my mouth, with a richness in a soup that I’ve sought my entire life. It’s served with two scoops of rice, and makes for a more than perfect meal.  At the end, if you don’t feel as strong as an, well, an ox, I’d be surprised.

Asahi Grill is celebrating their 75th year this year. Gary, the owner from Okinawa, who’s owned it for the last 30 years, came out and talked story with me the entire time I ate. I sucked on bones while Gary did most of the talking, slurped my soup, and tasted history, tales, and a broth that comes from hard work, pride, and Aloha. Maybe that’s what being famous is really all about.

The Asahi Grill was first started by an old Chinese man, then bought by an old Okinawan man, and then bought by Gary thirty years ago when he was young. It was first a restaurant in an auto repair shop, then inside of a bowling alley, and now is the Asahi Grill. The recipe was created by the first owner, and improved upon by the second, so is a mix of Chinese and Okinawan style cooking. You can also get an oxtail ramen, served with the same broth. Gary also owns the Kapiolani Coffee Shop in Waimalu where you can also get the famous oxtail soup.

I finished this incredible meal with the green tea/red bean gelato pie which wasn’t famous, but it was incredibly good. Famous or not, the Asahi Grill is a place you shouldn’t miss.
